Press Release: Storm Preparedness Bags
Sunshine Cathedral gathers volunteers to assemble “Storm Preparedness Bags” in preparation for the peak of hurricane season.
June 1st, 2023
Sunshine Cathedral, The World’s Largest Progressive Queer Church, physically located in Fort Lauderdale, FL, will group volunteers to assemble “Storm Preparedness Bags” for distribution on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 in preparation for the peak of hurricane season. The Community Foundation of Broward has issued a grant to the Food Sharing Ministry. With support of the grant, the Food Sharing Ministry will distribute hurricane preparedness kits including non-perishable food items, personal hygiene items, flashlights, batteries, and more.
In 2022, the food-sharing ministry fed over 30,000 people. The Sunshine Cathedral Food Sharing Ministry Team accepts food donations from the community as well as community partner organizations, and their efforts strive to help bring the community closer together. “What makes our outreach unique is that Sunshine Cathedral does not discriminate against anyone. We don’t ask for any identification or income verification… No questions asked. If you’re hungry, we feed you.” – Rev. Dr. Anne Atwell.
For context on the importance of this work, in 2022, a Category 4 storm, Ian packed 150 mph sustained winds and 10-15 feet of storm surge, making it one of the strongest hurricanes to make landfall in Florida, nearly 200+ people died and thousands experienced homelessness. This initiative by Sunshine Cathedral and the Food Sharing Ministry is designed to help those who are preparing and getting ready for the hurricane season, and to mitigate the damage of and help people impacted by extreme weather.
