About Sunshine Cathedral

Sunshine Cathedral is historically and predominantly an LGBTQ+ community, founded by and for the Queer community, with an affirming outreach to same-gender loving people as well as transgender and gender non-binary people. Heterosexual and Cisgender people are welcome and can be found in every area of service and leadership at Sunshine Cathedral and as allies to the LGBTQ community are part of the “+” that we proudly affirm in the LGBTQ+ acronym. Our “home base” is in Fort Lauderdale but we have a vibrant and active Global Fellowship as well!

We are a community committed to learning, to growing, to loving, to sharing. We hold a variety of beliefs, and individual beliefs are likely to change over time.

We affirm that each of us is a divine child of God, intrinsically good and blessed to be a blessing to our world.

So—What does the Cathedral believe?

What a wonderful question! Members and non-Members alike are welcome to explore the precious mysteries of life with courageous honesty, faithful doubt, heartfelt questions, and innocent wonder. We won’t all believe the same things, and over time, we will each change our minds about many matters of faith. Sunshine Cathedral, then, remains largely non-doctrinal and we simply expect that everyone will respect the spiritual journey that each person is on at any given time.

Some places that we begin from are:

  • All people have sacred value and worth.

  • LGBTQ+ persons are children of God and are as they are meant to be.

  • Peace is the Divine will.

  • Justice-seeking is integral to a life of faith.

  • Generosity and stewardship help inform our faith.

  • Kindness and compassion will win out as we express our love for each other and the Divine.

  • It is not only ok, but desirable, to have more questions than answers.

  • Why is it called a Cathedral? A Cathedral is the seat or “home base” of a bishop from which all their ministry extends. At Sunshine Cathedral we have two bishops on staff who were consecrated by the Global Justice Institute.

  • Is your church affiliated with any organization or denominational body? We are associated with the Metropolitan Community Churches, Divine Science Federation, International Council of Community Churches, and the International New Thought Alliance.

  • Am I welcome at your church? Whether it is your first time or your five-hundredth time, we hope you feel the warm embrace of love as you walk through our doors. You are welcome no matter what other churches or institutions have told you. You are welcome no matter your status, style, or stigmas the world has attached to you. You are welcome in this place!

  • Can I be a member and not live in Fort Lauderdale? But of course! We’d be honored to have you as a member of our Global Fellowship—but we also hope you’ll be sure to visit us if you’re ever in the area and stay connected through our various online events and happenings.
