The Wisdom of Pope Francis
“To put it simply: the holy Spirit bothers us. Because [It] moves us…makes us walk…pushes the Church to go forward. And we are like Peter at the Transfiguration: ‘Ah, how wonderful it is to be here like this, all together!’ – But don’t bother us. We want the holy Spirit to doze off. We want to domesticate the holy Spirit. And that’s no good, because [the Spirit] is God…is that wind which comes and goes and you don’t know where. [The Spirit] is the power of God; [It] is the one who gives us consolation and strength to move forward. But: to move forward! And this bothers us. It’s so much nicer to be comfortable.”

2 Peter 1.12-13, 16-18 (CEV)
“You are holding firm to the truth that you were given. But I am still going to remind you of these things. In fact, I think I should keep on reminding you until I leave this body. When we told you about the power and [coming] of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not telling clever stories that someone had made up. But with our own eyes we saw his true greatness. God…truly honored him by saying, ‘This is my own dear [Child], and I am pleased with him.’ We were there with Jesus on the holy mountain and heard this voice speak from heaven.”

Psalm 85.8-9 (NRSV)
I will listen to what…God is saying, for [God] is speaking peace to [the] faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to [holiness]. Truly, [divine] salvation is very near to those who [revere God], that [God’s] glory may dwell in our land.

1 Kings 19:9-18 (NRSV)
At Horeb, the mount of God, Elijah came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He answered, “I have been very zealous for the…God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.”
[God] said, “Go out and stand on the mountain…for the [HOLY ONE] is about to pass by.”

Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces…but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.

When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He answered, “I have been very zealous for…the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.” Then the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu…as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat…as prophet in your place. Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

The Wisdom of James Martin, SJ
“God does not ration the Spirit…The same holy Spirit in Jesus is in you! The Spirit inspires and encourages all of us.”

The Wisdom of Pope Francis
“Let’s promote friendship and respect between men and women of different religious traditions in order to build a world of peace.”

The Wisdom of A Course in Miracles
“There is no time, no place, no state where God is absent.”

Isaiah 56:1,6-8 (NRSV)
Thus says the [ALL-LOVING ONE]: “Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. And the foreigners who join themselves to [our community of faith]…all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant–these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their…offerings…will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” Thus says the [Sovereign] GOD, who gathers the outcasts…: “I will gather others to them besides those already gathered.”

Exodus 1:8-11a (NRSV)
Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. He said to his people, “Look, the Israelite people are more numerous and more powerful than we. Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase and, in the event of war, join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” Therefore they set taskmasters over them to oppress them with forced labor.

Psalm 124.2-3, 8 (NRSV)
If the LORD had not been on our side, when enemies rose up against us, then would they have swallowed us up alive in their fierce anger toward us. Our help is in the Name of the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth.

Matthew 16.13-20 (NRSV, adapted)
Jesus…asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Humanity is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptizer, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are Anointed, the one chosen by the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For your realization isn’t natural, but supernatural. And I tell you, you are a Rock, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Death will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the realm of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was God’s anointed.
