Executive Minister
The Rt. Rev. Robert Griffin, DMin is a Bishop in the Church and Executive Minister at Sunshine Cathedral. He is ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Global Justice Institute.
Robert Griffin's career began in the U.S. Navy, where he managed chapels on military bases for a decade as a Religious Programming Specialist. During his naval service, he received numerous awards, citations, honors, and medals.
Transitioning to civilian life, Bishop Griffin established a church in Hagerstown, Maryland, which he pastored for over eight years and continues to operate today. At New Light MCC in Hagerstown, he also served as the HIV Field Coordinator for the Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) and later became a Special Assistant to two Regional Elders and the Presiding Moderator of MCC.
In 2006, Bishop Griffin joined Sunshine Cathedral's staff, initially overseeing the Religious Education Program, then Social Justice Ministries, and ultimately becoming the Executive Minister. He has contributed significantly to Orientation to Pastoral Ministry programs and postulant intensive courses, aiding clergy aspirants in their educational and spiritual journeys to ordained ministry. Dr. Griffin is also a contributor to "The Essence of Ministry" (VTS).
Bishop Griffin is a graduate of both the Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) and Florida Center for Theological Studies. He has served as a Trustee of EDS and was a Governing Board member for MCC. He has been honored with the Bishop Otis Charles Preaching Prize (EDS) and the MCC People of African Descent Pioneer Award.
Bishop Griffin collaborates with Bishop Pat Bumgardner on the Public Policy Team and the Global Justice Institute, serving as an Auxiliary Bishop and liaison to the Caribbean and Africa. His activism and advocacy for religious affirmation of Queer people have been highlighted in Jamaican media and a Public Broadcasting special.
Griffin and his husband, Bishop Durrell Watkins, minister together at Sunshine Cathedral and with the Global Justice Institute. Throughout his dedicated service, Bishop Robert has shown unwavering commitment to social justice, inclusivity, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. His leadership and advocacy have inspired many, both within and beyond the religious sphere.
