A reading from the wisdom of Maya Angelou
“It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.”
A reading from the wisdom of Desmond Tutu
“Isn’t it amazing that we are all made in God’s image, and yet there is so much diversity among [God’s] people.”
The Acts of the Apostles (8.26-31, 35-39)
An angel…spoke to Philip, “At noon, take the road that leads from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert road.) 27 So he did. Meanwhile, an Ethiopian man was on his way home from Jerusalem, where he had come to worship. He was a eunuch and an official responsible for the entire treasury of Candace. (Candace is the title given to the Ethiopian queen.) 28 He was reading the prophet Isaiah while sitting in his carriage.29 The Spirit told Philip, “Approach this carriage and stay with it.” 30 Running up to the carriage, Philip heard the man reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you really understand what you are reading?” 31 The man replied, “Without someone to guide me, how could I?” Then he invited Philip to climb up and sit with him.
35 Starting with [the] passage [the Ethiopian man had been reading], Philip proclaimed the good news about Jesus to him. 36 As they went down the road, they came to some water. The eunuch said, “Look! Water! What would keep me from being baptized?”38 He ordered that the carriage halt. Both Philip and the eunuch went down to the water, where Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit suddenly took Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing.
A reading from the Psalter (98.1a, 4-6)
Sing to the All-in-all a new song because the Holy One has done wonderful things! Shout triumphantly to the Source of Life, all the earth! Be happy! Rejoice out loud! Sing your praises! 5 Sing your praises…with the lyre—with the lyre and the sound of music.
6 With trumpets and a horn blast, shout triumphantly before the Source of Life, the Universal Power!
The Acts of the Apostles (10.44-48)
While Peter was speaking, the holy Spirit fell on everyone who heard the word. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the holy Spirit had been poured out even on the [uncircumcised] Gentiles. 46 They heard them speaking in other languages and praising God. Peter asked, 47 “These people have received the holy Spirit just as we have. Surely no one can stop them from being baptized with water, can they?” 48 He directed that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited Peter to stay for several days.
A reading from the wisdom of Louise Hay
“The Universe totally supports every thought you choose to think and to believe. You have unlimited choices about what to think. Choose balance, harmony, and peace, and express it in your life.”
A reading from the wisdom of Pema Chodron
“Gentleness…helps to awaken the genuinely [enlightened mind]. This compassion, this clarity, this openness are like something we have forgotten. Sitting here being gentle with ourselves, we’re rediscovering something. It’s like a mother reuniting with her child…The way to reunite with the genuinely [enlightened mind] is to lighten up…”
A reading from the wisdom of G.K. Chesterton
“Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.”
A reading from the Psalter (103.1-5)
Let my whole being bless the divine Power! Let everything inside me bless God’s holy names!
2 Let my whole being bless the Infinite and never forget that Life is very good: how God restores you when you stumble, heals all your sickness, gives your existence meaning, crowns you with faithful love and compassion, 5and satisfies you with plenty of good things so that your vigor is made fresh like an eagle’s.
May 24th (Pentecost)
The Acts of the Apostles (2.1-4, 12-13, 15)
When Pentecost Day arrived, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenly a sound from heaven like the howling of a fierce wind filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be individual flames of fire alighting on each one of them. 4 They were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
12 They were all surprised and bewildered. Some asked each other, “What does this mean?” 13 Others jeered at them, saying, “They’re full of new wine!”
14 Peter stood with the other eleven apostles. He raised his voice and declared, “Judeans and everyone living in Jerusalem! Know this! Listen carefully to my words! 15 [Peter stood and shouted], “These people aren’t drunk, as you suspect; after all, it’s only nine o’clock in the morning!”
A reading from the Apostle Paul (1 Corinthians 12.4-11)
There are different spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; 5 and there are different ministries and the same Source; 6 and there are different activities but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. 7 A demonstration of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good. 8 A word of wisdom is given by the Spirit to one person, a word of knowledge to another according to the same Spirit, 9 faith to still another by the same Spirit, gifts of healing to another in the one Spirit, 10 performance of miracles to another, prophecy to another…different ways of speaking to another, and the gift of interpretation to another. 11 All these things are produced by the one and same Spirit who gives what each person is meant to have.
May 31st (Unity Sunday)
A reading from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6.4-7)
Listen! Our God is the Great I Am, the Source and Substance of all Being! 5 Love the Infinite with all your heart, all your being, and all your strength. 6 These words that I am commanding you today must always be on your minds. 7 Recite them to your loved ones. Talk about them when you are sitting around your house and when you are out and about, when you are lying down and when you are getting up.
A reading from the Apostle Paul (Romans 8.14-16)
All who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons and daughters. 15 You didn’t receive a spirit of slavery to lead you back again into fear, but you received a Spirit that shows you are…God’s children. With this Spirit, we cry, “Mother-Father God!.” 16 The same Spirit agrees with our spirit, that we are God’s children.
